Our Club's 40th Anniversary!

The Yellowknife Ski Club was formed in 1968 by a keen group of Nordic enthusiasts. It all started with a notice p osted on a Hudson's Bay grocery store bulletin board: "Anyone interested in skiing and starting a ski club, phone 873-2041."

Fewer than a dozen people showed up at the first meeting. They formed the inaugural executive of the Yellowknife Ski Club and the club was born.

The Club is proud to be celebrating our 40th anniversary.  Enjoy our special edition newsletter packed full of great stories and photos from members over the years.   Did you know we first started out with a tow rope powered by a truck motor on what Yellowknifers now know as the Jackfish Lake toboggan hill?  Read on!

Who We Are Today

Over the years, the club has grown along with the sport. Over 500 hundred members currently enjoy opportunities for fitness, fun, family and friends.

The Yellowknife Ski Club is located at 62 degrees North in Yellowknife, capital of Canada’s Northwest Territories. The 14 kilometres of trails weave themselves across the 42 hectares of lightly wooded rock outcrop and bog on the east side of the Ingraham Trail backing onto the picturesque Back Bay on Great Slave Lake.

The Ski Club promotes the sports of cross country skiing and biathlon through lessons, programs, fun events and social activities. Club members volunteer their time and enthusiasm to run the facilities, develop trails, develop and run lessons and programs, and support the development of young athletes on the way to varying levels of competition. Many Club members have gone on to successfully compete at the Arctic Winter Games as well as other regional events. Some of our high performance athletes have also made it to national and international events!
